1804, First Steam Locomotive

The first steam locomotive was developed in the UK in 1804 by Richard Trevithick. The first trial run happened on February 21, 1804 in South Wales. It was a 9 mile run with a top speed of 5 mph. There are no known pictures of the original engine. All the information about the engine is found in a partial blueprint , personal letters and word of mouth. There are a number of replicas of the original engine based on a conscientious of information at the time. My model is based on research of this information. I will post pictures of my project as it is built. The first two images below are sketches and pictures of replicas of the first oribinal engine.

Project picture of the cylinder installed in the boiler
Firebox, smoke stack cylinder head, and flues installed

I have the fire box completed. The piston with rings along with the piston rod packing glan is completed. I have the cross head just about complete. I did a trial run of the engine on compressed air and it was successful. In a week or two I should have the boiler buttoned up and will run a complete test of the boiler and engine as a unit.

1804 locomotive 99% complete
I have the locomotive, tender, and tanker 99% complete.
Note the wheels do not have a flange. The flange on the first trains were on the track.
I have designed the wheels so a flange can be attached to the backside of each wheel.
This will allow it to run on a 7 1/2 gauge track.

I needed a place to display the train so I decided on a train trestle.
It took several days to just do the math calculating lengths, angles, and bolt hole patterns since the parts
are different lengths and angles. There are joint plates bolted to every joint with 2# bolts, very small.
I have about 400 2# bolts in this build. A 2# bolt is .086 inches in diameter.
